How to get to FLOW

Hoop Dance is...

Hoop Dance is a variation of hula hooping and can contain elements of juggling, poi, belly dancing, gymnastics, yoga and more. The fundamentals of Hoop Dance (keeping the hoop rotating while moving your legs and arms) can be learned in a few hours at the most. When you add a few "tricks," your Hoop Dance is taken to another level where movements combine to flow from one to another creating a limitless dance form.

Modern Hoops

The hoops used for Hoop Dance are made of larger, heavier tubing than the ones you tried as a kid. The weight of the modern hoop combined with a textured surface provide a satisfying blend of "grip" and centrifugal force that helps keep the hoop rotating. This hoop is way funner than the flimsy kind!

Benefits of Hoop Dance

HAPPINESS:  It's a virtual guarantee that you will feel better just picking up a hoop to Hoop Dance. There is something about a hula hoop that says "It's time to play!" Try going to a farmer's market with a couple of hoops, put them on the ground and watch what happens. Kids AND adults will pick them up. Hoop Dancing is a ton of fun!

EXERCISE:  A healthy life is one of pleasurable emotions and a body that functions with ease. Moving your body to the point of increasing your heart rate and breaking a sweat draws energy (life force, chi) into your physical body in a way that encourages a healthy life. Life (you) stimulating life (chi).

One particularly fabulous feature of Hoop Dance is that it's so much fun, you won't have to force yourself to do it like so many other exercise forms. In fact, if you're at all like me, you'll have to force yourself not to Hoop Dance as much as you want so you can get other stuff done!

Regular aerobic exercise like Hoop Dancing can improve your mood, combat chronic diseases, help manage weight, boost your energy level, promote better sleep, and even put an added spark in your sex life!

PEACE ON EARTH:  Not only is it fun to Hoop Dance, but it's fun to watch other people do it, too. Positive emotions that run through us by having fun can spread to people around us through a process called rhythm entrainment. Rhythm entrainment is when two vibrations of a similar frequency snyc up, usually a weaker vibration matching the stronger one. Creating a vibration from positive emotions increases the likelihood of you positively influencing other people, even without your realizing it.

The phenomenon of rhythm entrainment is not limited to the time you are actually hooping or watching someone else hoop, but for as long as the positive energy lingers. My Hoop Dance students leave class feeling great after having fun learning a new skill, being playful & getting some exercise. They go to the grocery store where they'll come in contact with other people. They go home to their kids and partners. Or some live alone but interact with friends and family continually. All of these interactions are positively effected by your hooping experience.

The potential to have a positive effect on the people around you expands to include the people they will come in contact with. The expansion can further extend to include the community you live in which can further expand to successively larger communities until the entire world is positively effected.

It is most definitely possible to foster world peace through Hoop Dance.

As explained below, Hoop Dance also facilitates personal transformation. And, if we are to transform the world, we must begin with our own transformation.

Honor your body to increase inner awareness

FLOW state to foster creative insight

TRANSFORMATION

The CHAKRA System as a tool for transformation is rooted in Chakra 1 at the base of the spine. Our life experience undeniably includes our physical body which operates on the physical plane, the environment of Chakra 1. The Sanskrit name for Chakra 1, Muladhara, means root support. In this sense, our path to enlightenment begins in our bodies which provide the support for the transformational journey.

In order to achieve transcendent states of bliss, we must first honor our bodies, our physical selves, which provide the vehicle for that experience. Bringing awareness to the amazing gift we have been given in the form or our bodies fosters the reverence our bodies deserve. They are transmitters & receivers of information from our deep inner being. If we want to know who we really are and what we are really feeling so we can trust our own guidance system, we need only to listen to and observe our bodies.

Hoop Dance can bring you out of your head, which is where awareness spends much of its time, and down into your amazing body. Noticing how Hoop Dance makes your body feel increases your skill at noticing all of your feelings and any associated emotions. Developing this skill is crucial to your transformational process because knowing how and what you are feeling informs your choices.

Hoop Dance also fosters FLOW. Wikipedia sez: "FLOW is the mental state of operation in which the person is fully immersed in what he or she is doing by a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and success in the process of the activity. Colloquial terms for this or similar mental states include: to be on the ball, in the zone, or in the groove." Ah yes, in the groove! A good place to be.

FLOW is considered a non-ordinary state of being. This non-ordinary state of being opens us up to creative insight, also known as a quantum leap or an "aha!" moment. Creativity is the discovery or invention of something new that has value. And newness is an inherent component of progressive transformation because something new has to happen (either a physical/outward change or a mental/inward change) for your life to be different.

There are an unlimited number of ways to enter into a state of FLOW.  Hoop Dance is just one...and it's a fabulous one!!
